Perhaps on of the biggest expenses associated with parenthood in the 21st century is child day care. With more and more households that have two working parents in them, child day care is a valuable service and a big expense. That means that finding the right one is something you should take very seriously. Here are a few tips on what to do when looking for the right child day care.

When looking at child day care centers, word of mouth is extremely valuable. Ask around to parents you know. Find out where they take their children, whether or not they are happy, and what they feel are the pros and cons of the particular child day care they use. No matter how many tours you take, visits you make, or articles you read, there is no substitute for talking to someone who has actually left their child with someone.

Secondly, when looking for child day care centers, don’t be afraid to drop in unannounced. When you pay surprise visits, you see what the center is truly like. Pay attention to how the children seem; see how the staff seems, and get a feel for the atmosphere of the place. Once you get past safety and cleanliness, there is a lot to be said for how a place “feels” when you are there.

Finally, day care centers are very personal. If you don’t like a place, you don’t need a reason. This is a place where you are going to leave you little one alone with others. If there is something you don’t like, that is your business. You have to be comfortable. If you are comfortable, then your child is more likely to be comfortable as well.

Choosing a day care is not easy, but it is a necessity for many. Just remember to ask around, drop in unexpectedly, and try to find the place where you are most comfortable. Once you do that, you have done all you can do.
